Get to Know Xiaoye!

About myself

Hi! I’m Xiaoye Zhao, originally from Shenzhen, China. I started off with a Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering at Heilongjiang University, then continued with a Master’s in Architecture and Civil Engineering at Shenzhen University. During my Master’s, I explored how rust and cracks develop in reinforced concrete — especially in coastal structure — using XCT imaging as a non-destructive way to analyze the process. Currently, I’m doing my PhD at MARUM, the University of Bremen, in Germany.

Information about my project:

My project focus is on submarine landslides — more specifically, on understanding the microstructure of failure planes and weak layers. I work with high-resolution 3D and 4D micro-CT imaging, and combine it with geotechnical experiments to study how these weak layers form and evolve. The goal is to improve how we model and analyze landslide mechanisms, with some support from machine learning along the way. It’s a pretty complex topic that links micto-CT imaging, machine learning, and geotechnics. You can check out more details about the project on my project page.

Why POSEIDON?

So, how did I end up in POSEIDON? To be honest, I was just casually checking out opportunities. I wasn’t deep into PhD hunting when I first came across the project, but I thought the topic clicked with me. I had been working with XCT imaging during my Master’s, also I have a growing interest in machine learning application, and I was already getting curious about how machine learning could tie into this kind of work. It felt like a natural next step. The topic was solid, and the timing was right. So I applied — and here we are.

Since joining, it’s been a rewarding ride. I’ve met awesome people from across Europe, learned a ton from both from peers and experts. There’s a strong sense of community, and the cross-institution collaborations really open up new perspectives and possibilities.

And if you’re curious about what the other DCs are up to — definitely check them out also on our LinkedIn!
