About myself
Hi everyone! I’m Henry, originally from Indonesia. I completed my bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering at the Bandung Institute of Technology. After that, I moved to the Netherlands to pursue a master’s degree in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Geotechnical Engineering at TU Delft. During my studies, I also worked at Seaway7, an offshore transport and installation company, for a year. After graduating, I moved to Oslo, Norway to begin my PhD at NGI (Norwegian Geotechnical Institute), with the degree awarded by NTNU.
Information about my project
So the topic of my PhD is “Offshore Infrastructure Resilient Design.” It’s a broad and interesting subject, covering A LOT of stuff from assessing the current state of offshore infrastructure, identifying the need for new foundation types, designing such foundations considering the current industrial practices, transportation and installation, even accounting for soil heterogeneity and variability. Most of my work will involve numerical simulations and (potentially) developing a new design framework to guide the process of designing resilient offshore foundations. See my project page for more details.
Why POSEIDON?
Now, shifting from the technical to the exciting part—POSEIDON! Since this is the first series, let me briefly introduce it. POSEIDON is an EU Horizon MSCA project—essentially a research consortium involving many partners and PhD researchers working together across Europe.
I came across POSEIDON on LinkedIn in January/February 2024. To be honest, I wasn’t actively considering a PhD at the time. But when I saw the topic—and especially that it was at NGI, which for me is a dream place as a geotechnical engineer—I knew I had to apply. It became my one and only choice. I could only hope they would pick me—and luckily, they did!
Since joining, I’ve realized just how exciting and rewarding this journey is. I’ve met amazing new friends and colleagues from all over Europe—Germany, France, the Netherlands, the UK, and more. It’s great to be part of a community of fellow PhDs, sharing experiences (and struggles!) together. We also get incredible exposure to various partner institutions through secondments and collaborations, opening up opportunities to learn, grow, and maybe even land a future job!
It’s amazing to be part of POSEIDON.
